Historical Residences
The Bard-How House
The Bard-How house represents an 18th century dwelling, and appears as it might have after its construction by merchant Bennett Bard. The property is utilized for many of our living history programs.
The Captain James Lawrence House
The Captain James Lawrence House serves two functions.
The first floor is in the federal style; as such it is period to James Lawrence's victories and later premature end. This allows the visitor to envision the time and life of Lawrence, and aids in one's interpretation.
The upper floor is composed of a single gallery, currently serving as an exhibition space for our Gaunt collection, and a variety of other fascinating artifacts.
The Upper Gallery
Here are two photographs showing the current exhibition in the upper gallery, which is mainly centered on our Gaunt collection.
The James Fenimore Cooper House
The James Fenimore Cooper House, represents the various periods of its construction and our Joseph Bonaparte collection.
The front parlor is currently indicative of Cooper's era, accommodating a variety of furnishings. The rear parlor shows both its use as a kitchen and exhibits a federal era tea set. Finally, the upper floor has been utilized for our Joseph Bonaparte/Point Breeze collection.
Joseph Bonaparte Room
This exhibit presents some exquisite artifacts that once belonged to Joseph Bonaparte's Point Breeze Estate. Bonaparte lived in Bordentown for 16 years, after seeking a safe haven in U.S. following the fall of the Napoleonic Empire.
(Point Breeze was situated in nearby Bordentown, NJ.)
